The City of Bayfield competed in a yearlong competition called the Clean Utility Energy Challenge which was funded by The Great Lakes Protection Fund and American Water Works Association. The inaugural 2017-2018 competition, focused on the Great Lakes Basin, was aimed at connecting the utilities with new innovative software that reduces mercury and other emissions while reducing the utility’s operations and management costs. The City of Bayfield used LEEM (Locational Emission Estimation Methodology) technology which provides predictive and real-time emission intensity data for mercury, CO2, SO2, NOx, and lead. From the free day-ahead information, the City of Bayfield was able to manipulate the times that water was pumped to lower emission times thus reducing the amount of emissions released as well as saving energy cost. We were successful in our efforts and managed to earn the title of Green Champion along with a $10,000 prize!
