Historic Preservation and Building Ordinances Amended
The City has updated its Historic Preservation Ordinance and other portions of the City Code relating to building inspections and permits to streamline zoning and building permitting. Common Council adopted ordinance no. 406 on January 20, 2026, following a public hearing. It went into effect on January 30, 2026.
This ordinance dissolved the Architectural Review Board (ARB) and eliminated the City's former historic district, which covered most of the built area in the City regardless of an individual building's age or significance. It also replaced the City's 'building permit' process with a new zoning permit, delegated building inspection to Bayfield County, and created a new Historic Preservation Commission to guide the work of historic preservation in the City with a more targeted approach—designating individual structures and sites and allowing for the creation of new 'micro-districts.'
