Gordon T. Ringberg - Mayor

Located on the south shore of Lake Superior, surrounded by the Chequamegon National Forest, and a gateway to the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, Bayfield is the smallest incorporated city in Wisconsin.  Although our community, with a year round population of 487 and snuggled within a total area of 1 square mile, is small in size, we are big on hospitality.

The combination of natural wonders, year round activities and small town charm have earned us the titles of, “Best Little Town in the Midwest” by the Chicago Tribune, “Best Trail Town in the Midwest” by Backpacker Magazine, “Best Town in Wisconsin” by Midwest Living Magazine, one of “America's Best Coastal Small Towns” by USA Today 10Best, along with nominations to many other “Best of” lists over the years.  We appreciate these accolades, but they just scratch the surface when it comes to describing all of the things that make Bayfield such a special place.

The crystal clear waters of Lake Superior and the Apostle Islands call to the adventurous spirt of sailors, fishermen, kayakers, and beachcombers.  A network of trails weave through the surrounding hills and verdant forests for hiking, biking, skiing, dog sledding, horseback riding, snowmobiles and ATVs.  Area orchards erupt with strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, cherries and apples from spring through fall.  Award winning restaurants serve locally grown produce, family farmed meats, artisanal cheese, freshly caught trout and whitefish.  Distinctive shops sell locally crafted art, jewelry, clothing and much more.  Our inns, cottages and B&Bs provide fluffy pillows to greet weary travelers after a long day of exploration.

We work very hard at the city level to protect and preserve the historic, cultural and natural resources that attract people to Bayfield and make this a great place to visit and live.  We value clean air, clean water, green space and a high quality of life.  Speak with some of our residents and it won’t take long before you find someone who came for a weekend and stayed for a lifetime.

We invite you to visit Bayfield and discover why this is where “the water meets the soul”.
